Brookings, S.D., October 18, 2023 – The South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council is thrilled to invest $2.5 million of soybean checkoff dollars over the next five years in support of the POET Bioproducts Center. This contribution ignites excitement for the future, uniting agriculture, farming communities, and biotechnology in a mission to cultivate sustainable innovation.

With the POET Bioproducts Center situated at the heart of agricultural innovation in the South Dakota State University (SDSU) Research Park, the potential for transformative progress beginning in animal feed and bioproducts has never been more promising. This $2.5 million commitment - $500,000 annually for 5 years, is a testament to the South Dakota Soybean Checkoff's dedication to advancing the soybean industry and its crucial role in fostering a greener, more prosperous tomorrow.

Visitors to the POET Bioproducts Center are greeted with examples of innovation and soy uses right at the entry of the building. A prominent display showcases the remarkable versatility of soy, highlighting its significance in a variety of industries, from soy-based shoes to ink. It exemplifies the rich legacy of soybeans as a source of inspiration and innovation.

Additionally, in front of the building, a lush and vibrant soy-based turf welcomes guests. This innovative landscaping choice not only demonstrates the versatility of soy-based products but also underlines the commitment to sustainable practices at the POET Bioproducts Center. It symbolizes the integration of agriculture and biotechnology to create a greener, more sustainable future.

David Struck, Chairman of the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council and farmer from Wolsey, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "As a farmer, I am excited about the possibilities that this investment brings. It's not just about advancing soybean research; it's about shaping the future of agriculture and biotechnology. The POET Bioproducts Center is a beacon of innovation, and this partnership underscores our commitment to a brighter, more sustainable future."

In addition to the SD Soybean Checkoff investment, the 45,000-square-foot facility was made possible through $20 million in legislative funding, $5 million from POET and $2 million from South Dakota Corn, and the state of South Dakota has committed $500,000 yearly for operational costs. The U.S. Economic Development Administration has provided another $3 million for the purchase of specialized equipment needed for the labs.

This partnership extends beyond the laboratory and field; it's a pivotal force driving economic growth in South Dakota's agricultural sector and beyond. It's a testament to the resilience of farmers and the adaptability of biotechnology. By harnessing the unique potential of soybeans and other agricultural resources, the POET Bioproducts Center is set to unlock opportunities that reverberate far past our state's borders.

The South Dakota Soybean Checkoff's $2.5 million investment is a resounding declaration of their unwavering support for the agricultural community, promoting environmentally sustainable solutions and spurring economic vitality. It signals a new era where agriculture, farming, and biotechnology converge to create a dynamic future.
