soy100: Growing 100-Bushel Soybeans Event Recap

Last week over 230 producers from across the state attended the soy100: Growing 100-Bushel Soybeans event at SDSU. This free event, brought to you by the South Dakota soybean checkoff, highlighted best management practices, as well as strategies for increasing soybean yields.

Ed Usset, grain marketing specialist from the University of Minnesota, was this year’s featured speaker. He gave insights on current trends in the market as well as advice for the future. Usset bases his market advice on early pricing. Usset shares there are some years where the harvest price ends up higher than the early pricing advantage. But more often than not, Usset says early pricing of grain is paying off for producers. Hear a snapshot of his presentation in the video below.

The afternoon breakout sessions included a marketing economics presentation by Ed Usset, an agronimist panel with Winfield representative Ryan Wolf and retired SDSU professor Gregg Carlson and a presentation on white mold management from SDSU Extension Plant Pathologist, Emmanual Byamukama.

We know disease management is on the top of farmer’s minds. Byamukama shared tips on staying ahead of diseases during the upcoming growing season. As disease becomes more difficult to management, Byamukama shares that scouting is more important than ever.

Dr. Sharon Clay, SDSU Distinguished Professor, gave a presentation on managing herbicide resistant weeds. She explained that herbicide resistance weed management is a systems approach including crop rotation, tillage rotation and using herbicides with different modes of action.
