When it comes to soybean markets, 2019 is a year filled with risk and opportunity, says risk management expert, Ted Seifried, Chief Market Strategist of brokerage firm Zaner Ag Hedge.

“The scope of outcomes between now and harvest are wide. There are so many unknowns and a wide range of possibilities to plan for. Anything from over $12 to under $7 is on the table,” explains Seifried, a contributing analyst, who writes an Agweb risk management blog called The Ted Spread and is a regular analyst on Market to Market, AgriTalk and RFD TV.

Seifried will discuss what those extreme possibilities are, and how soybean farmers should plan for them, during soy100 held in Brookings March 13 and Aberdeen March 14, 2019.

Hosted by South Dakota Soybean Research & Promotion Council (SDSRPC), in conjunction with SDSU Extension and South Dakota State University, soy100 is sponsored by the South Dakota soybean checkoff and is offered at no cost.

In addition to marketing advice, soy100 brings together agronomic experts and winners of the 2018 South Dakota Soybean Yield Contest to provide South Dakota’s soybean growers with research-based and farmer-tested information on how to break the 100-bushel bean barrier.

“Soybean farmers can expect a day filled with valuable information they can implement to improve their marketing strategy, management practices and overall bottom line,” says Viborg soybean farmer, Jon Schaeffer, South Dakota Soybean Association Treasurer & District 2 board member.

South American competition & trade issues with China … how did we get here?

During his soy100 presentation Seifried will provide insight and background into the factors currently impacting soybean markets.

“There are many things going on to impact the markets – much more than a normal year – government shutdown, trade issues with China and a string of exceptional production years for the U.S. as well as our South American competition,” explains the commodities broker and market analyst.

Of all the factors, Seifried says trade issues with China top the list of market impactors.

“The market doesn’t know what to do until we have some sort of resolution with China; which, could possibly happen before soy100. The details of that trade deal could dictate the direction of the markets and what producers should do as far as marketing plans go.”

Whether the details are worked out or not, Seifried will provide soy100 attendees with options to consider when developing their 2019 marketing strategy.

The soy100 event in Brookings will be held on the campus of SDSU in the Performing Arts Center (1601 University Blvd., Brookings). The soy100 event in Aberdeen will be held at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel & Convention Center (1400 8th Ave NW).
