Profitability

In terms of policy, no one has put more money into soybean producers in the last five years than the South Dakota Soybean Association (SDSA) and the American Soybean Association (ASA). We are respected in Pierre and Washington, DC and have favorably influenced ag policy and ag finance for many years. Your membership will allow that to continue.

Biodiesel

SDSA strongly supports the development and use of biodiesel. Biodiesel will move large surpluses of soybean oil off the market, brining higher prices for soybeans and more money into farmer’s pockets. Farmer members at SDSA are advancing legislation in Pierre and Washington, DC to dramatically expand this market.

With a 2 percent biodiesel blend, 700 million gallons of biodiesel would be utilized nationally. Experts say that would be an increase of 15 cents per bushel or more.

Farm Bill

SDSA and ASA fought hard during the 2002 Farm Bill debate to ensure soybean farmers were treated equitably. The bill increased the safety net for soybean producers by .32 cents, from $5.25 per bushel to $5.58 per bushel. As a result of this increase, soybean farmers will receive on average an extra $1,300 for every 100 acres farmed.

Domestic Livestock

The livestock industry is the soybean producer’s largest customer, consuming more than 1.4 billion bushels of U.S. soybeans each year – about 50 percent of total U.S. soybean production. SDSA advocates for clear, consistent and reasonable regulations that will allow livestock to grow and thrive in South Dakota.

Exports

Every other row of soybeans are exported each year. The U.S. needs to reduce barriers that are restricting soy and meat exports to 96 percent of the world’s population that lives outside our borders. We are working to break down these barriers!

SDSA and ASA manages the world’s only international soy market development program, responsible for promoting U.S. soy exports to more than 80 countries. Due to this international marketing, soybean exports neared over 1 billion bushels in the 2004-05 marketing year.
